#StayingHomeFor Survival Guide

Cases of COVID-19 have begun to appear in almost every community across the United States over the past week. To stay safe, many people are now under “Shelter In Place” orders from their state governors, guidelines that ask citizens to only go out if absolutely necessary, like for groceries or exercise.  As social distancing and isolation begin to take their toll on our collective mental health, it’s important to remember the things we can do to help keep our attitudes positive and our bodies healthy.

Routine

One of the most important things you can do to help keep your mind on target and upbeat is to make a schedule and stick to it. Creating routine gives a rhythm to our daily lives that reduces the need to plan, freeing our brain power for things we might want to do during our free time. Not only that, but it can help us be more efficient at various tasks, whether that’s cleaning or working from home.

Exercise

A routine makes setting aside time for exercise a bit easier, too! Even during a “Shelter In Place” order, people are encouraged to get outside and move around. On top of keeping your body healthy, getting outside for a half-hour or more each day can help bolster your mental health. Being stuck at home might make it seem like exercise options are limited. However, now is the perfect time to try taking up new activities like digital yoga, lunchtime walks, or give an exercise game like Just Dance or Ring Fit Adventure another whirl.

Socialization

The ability for us to socialize as a part of our everyday experience that has been hit the hardest by this global pandemic. Thankfully, we have more avenues to communicate with one another than ever before. Given the amount of downtime many of us are facing, our D&D groups can probably schedule a night to meet over Skype or Discord to play a session once per week now. Multiplayer video games provide a great outlet, too. Free games like Call of Duty: Warzone, League of Legends, Fortnite, or Jackbox Party Pack providing great group activities for online game nights. On top of all of that, there has never been a better time to try your hand at streaming to find community with Twitch, Mixer, or YouTube audiences.
