Team Nerd Stash and Extra Life Bring Joy to Kentucky Children’s Hospital

A recent donation of 50 mini iPads has opened a world of exploration and connection to Kentucky Children’s Hospital patients. What made this possible? Video games.

Funds for these iPads came from Extra Life, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ fundraising program within the gaming community.  Extra Life has raised $126,186.33 for Kentucky Children’s Hospital since 2013, including $25,491.18 in 2019 alone. These donations come dollar by dollar from followers and  subscribers who donate while watching, as well as individual gamers.

Some of those gamers include Team Nerd Stash, a community of gamers who stream 365 days a year to raise funds for Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Their dedicated efforts raise majority of funds for Extra Life, making gifts like these iPads possible.

The Child Life Program staff will use these iPads to elevate care and experience for hospital patients of all ages. By playing video games, patients can enjoy entertainment and experience a sense of normalcy during the otherwise foreign and unnerving experience of a hospital stay.

Additionally, these iPads increase connection and interaction for students by allowing them to connect with others. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, KCH has restricted visitors; however, thanks to the iPads, patients have spent time with family and friends. They have even spent time with UK athletes and interacted with actors such as Jack Black and other Hollywood entertainers.

During unprecedented and often lonely times, these moments of connection allow kids to still feel like kids. Extra Life and Team Nerd Stash’s gaming efforts bring entertainment, smiles and hope to young patients each day.
